Stress can be an intrinsic part of growing, for both boys and
girls. A child's growing up years are wrought with tremendous change in
terms of his physical make up - necessitating dynamic mental
transformation. A child's world also changes very rapidly in terms of
people and circumstances, creating a lot of anxiety and stress. Children
have to be handled very patiently and intelligently to enable them to
cope with the transition from childhood to pre-adolescence and from
pre-adolescence to teenage phases.
Stress and tension is common in children just like adults. Hormonal and bodily changes, academic pressures, negligent or faulty parenting, peer pressure, social challenges, and familial responsibilities - can all combine to create a lot of stress in children. The onus for dealing with this with understanding and compassion falls on the shoulder of parents. Parents who are not emotionally available for their children in their delicate years can create a lot of problems. It is also important for adults to have very positive coping mechanisms, to bring up happy and healthy children. Stress in children manifests as aggression, emotional disability, meekness, phobias, fears, listlessness, apathy and rebellion.
Children should be allowed to live their childhood, because any attempt to impose adult standards on them prematurely can create revolt and indignation. The difficulty of growing-up and wrong handling by elders has caused many adolescents to fall prey to depression. Fears and anxieties can also cause children to under perform at various levels and damage their personality for life. It is important for parents to talk to their children constantly and find out what is happening in their life. Healthy and fearless communication between parent and child helps them to imbibe many coping strategies.
Children are not equipped to be burdened with adult problems. Instead of discussing their problems with children, adults should tell them about family values and ideals in a casual and friendly manner. Positive reinforcement in the form of appreciation and praise does much to dispel stress in children. Mature use of humor to neutralize bad situations and sentiments helps children to view themselves objectively and laugh often. Physical exercise, sports and healthy relationships with extended family, neighbors and friends can also do much to dispel the spell of stress in growing children. It's important for parents to help children share their feeling with them. Last but not the least - compliments, hugs and kisses go all the way in making kids happy and confident individuals.
